◆ This is an increasingly rare Obsidian from the Oki Islands, where mining is no longer permitted. The crafting was meticulously done by hand by Magatama artisans in the Izumo region. The remote Oki Islands of Shimane Prefecture are the only source of obsidian in the Chugoku region. Formed approximately 5 million years ago by the rapid cooling of rhyolitic magma from volcanic activity, this high-quality natural glass was born from Oki's unique geological environment. Obsidian from Oki has been excavated from ancient ruins across the Chugoku, Shikoku, and Niigata regions, indicating that its exceptional quality made it an indispensable material for life in ancient Japan.
◆ Vertically polished stones with a hole drilled in the center have been excavated from ancient ruins and are known as 'Taishu' (large beads). Because the hole placement is somewhat unusual for a simple pendant, there are various theories regarding their purpose—some suggest the shape represents a combination of yin and yang symbols, while others believe they were used as fertility amulets or even whistles. Although their exact original purpose remains a mystery, there is little doubt they were cherished as important protective amulets in ancient times.
